Kerala Forest GeoPortal is an Internet based Geo Spatial Data Directory for the available spatial data of Forest Department developed by KSDI using the available geodatabase generated by the Geoinformatics Centre (GIC) at Forest Headquarters, Vazhuthacaud. The Kerala Forest Geoportal is intended for use by Departmental officials. This allows the departmental officials to explore the information related to administrative boundaries, reserve forests, plantations, roads, rivers, resources, infrastructure facilities and much more with attributes. Spatial datasets generated, maintained by the Geo-informatics centre of Forest Headquarters are proposed to be made accessible through the project.

The Kerala Forest Department (KFD) established Geoinformatics Centre at the Forest Headquarters in 1999 as part of the World Bank aided Kerala Forestry Project (1998 to 2003). In the last 12 years, by utilizing services of the in-house personnel (mainly field staff), based on the data supplied by the various Forest Divisions, GIS layers have been prepared for incorporating in the GIS maps for all the Territorial and Wildlife Divisions. Boundary details of the Forest Divisions/Ranges/Sections have been incorporated based on the reserve notifications issued at the time of formation/alteration of jurisdiction/extent of the Divisions.

The Portal will essentially be used for the following objectives:
  • To make available spatial data for the benefit of the Department officials.
  • To analyze the needs of the department for generating spatial datasets.
  • To facilitate decision support system and helps in local level planning.
